‘This body of work contains paintings with three styles: fluid and loose; quick and disciplined; structured and deliberate. I have found myself moving between these approaches. The physicality for each is different, oscillating between flowing and tensioned. Many of the paintings arose directly from an experimental state. The more planned pieces are thematically tied, exploring the crucifixion of Jesus. Other ideas explored across the work include: divine determinism; nature as transcendent; the energy of a parent-child relationship; human intimacy with suffering. ‘ - Max Maclaurin
