Artist Biography

Taranaki based multidisciplinary artist, Sean Hill is Samoan/NZ European descent and loves to create artworks that spark new interest into art-making and where art is going for future generations.
Graduated from university studying Visual Arts, Sean’s practice is all about conceptual thinking of creating movement within artworks, experimenting with colours, textures, shapes and materials. Refurbishing pallet wood as canvases keeps Sean’s practice playful, this shows the artwork is the research rather than gathering information to make work - his ideas are at random but through a rhythm of intuitive process, making the artworks unique to their own nature.

Sean has many ideas, perspectives and processes on how energy can be seen in a physical form, energy that is internal within the human condition but also vibrant and electrical through human emotions.

He constantly plays with colours and shapes also through his Samoan heritage, inspiration for his pattern artworks which are an abstract form of pe’a and tatau culture in Samoa - this process is how Sean identifies as being Samoan through rhythmic abstract patterns.

Through reimagining nature and physical objects around him, his heritage and conceptual thinking create a practice that is constantly evolving - changing with the world but also adapting new ideas within his shifting pallet artworks, creating a transfer from one form into another - linking to interconnectedness and constant transformation within his practice.

Enersefrequence is a combination of three words: energy, sequence and frequencycombining to create one singular word.

The idea of this exhibition is creating artworks that individually represent each of these words but also combine as a Enersefrequence within the exhibition space, while they have individual constructs, they seamlessly merge as one.

Energy can be quite powerful and valuable; Sean wants the audience to experience the power of abstract forms as energy itself and how you can experience a world in front of you but also within your body. Energy that shifts and changes from one form to another, taking the definition into a painterly experience.

From energy turns into sequences, sequences of patterning and colourful shapes. Sean uses a combination of his abstraction of Samoan Tatau, nature, experimenting with colours, musical notes, and creating shapes through an intuitive process – all these processes and experiments help create different sequences through each piece, each telling their own story and carefully well sequenced.

Into each artwork frequency has been embedded, whether spikey, static and vibrant or subtle and hidden, representing different frequency vibrations. This style has been an exploration through Sean’s practice of how abstract forms can mimic frequency into our physical world.

Through these static forms, it almost feels like you can experience electricity through each painting, as electricity has no boundary so does the artworks – they flow, merge, wrap, explode, extend and expand. Tying back to energy: transforming from one form into another and becomes Enersefrequence.

Through abstract forms and frequency static lines, Sean wants the viewer to experience the importance on colour and how colour changes our energy through a visual experience. Creating an experience that is visually stimulating, playfully cohesive, expanding abstract meanings, colourfully balanced and to experiment on how different forms of reality can be visually enjoyed.
