Sam Hickson

For many years the focus of my painting has been portraiture and studies of the human face.  I am now moving towards depicting the whole person in his or her urban surroundings.   My inspiration comes from different cultures, particularly those in densely populated Asian cities such as Bangkok, Tokyo, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

I love the atmosphere of busy metropolitan life in Asia, the hustle and bustle of street trade, bargaining and negotiating one’s way around the chaos of people, tuk-tuks, motor cycles and cars.   It is this extraordinary vibrancy of life in Asian megacities that I try and capture in my paintings.
